Born in 1788, an abbe and in charge of Charenton Asylum by the age of 26, Francois had a bright future ahead if not for the ambition and hubris of his most infamous patient, the Marquis de Sade. The young priest was no match for the cunning nobleman who had already evaded the likes of Madame Guillotine. No match for the cruelty and ambition of another man, the alienist Doctor Royer-Collard. Despite his best efforts, the asylum descended into true bedlam. The woman he loved was murdered, and he as much a monster as anything born of the mind of the writer he tried to silence. He descended into madness. By the end of it all, he was patient rather than director, sinner instead of saint, but he found freedom in the most unlikely of places, at the tip of a quill. | ||||||
